Prices rise for both retail buyers and wholesalers.
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry notes that over the past six months, domestic prices for wheat, rye, corn have grown in all positions from UAH 3.7-4.7 thousand to almost UAH 9 thousand per ton. It is grain that accounts for up to 60% of the cost of one egg.
A few months ago, flour was cheaper than the grain from which it is made today.
“The situation is similar in the sugar market. Domestic sugar prices are 30-40% higher than world prices, and Ukrainian producers of confectionery and bakery products, ice cream and others on the domestic market cannot contract sugar,” the CCI notes.
Rising prices are accelerating inflation. According to the State Statistics Service, in January prices increased by 1.3% on average compared to the previous month, and by 6.1% compared to the same period last year.
Excluding the seasonal component, consumer prices in January increased by 1%, which is a significant increase for one month. And although the growth in the cost of butter, sugar and vegetables slowed down, their contribution, complemented by another increase in the price of eggs, led to an increase in the price index for food products by 1.4% per month.
